Johnny Lightning cars made by Topper was an upcoming die-cast toy car brand. It was really making big strides on Hot Wheels and then suddenly closed it doors for busness in 1971.
What a shame since their sponsored Al Unser Johnny Lightning race car won the Indy 500 in 1970 and 1971.
From the Ultimate Hot Wheels Redlines BBM Channel...
"Topper sponsored race car driver Al Unser who won the 1970 Indy 500! The sales of Johnny Lightning went through the roof following this!
This is the AD Topper launched...
Boys, which are faster- the new Johnny Lightning 500's or the Sizzlers?
Challenge a kid who has a Sizzler and win!!!
That was a bold statement!"
Topper closed their doors for good in 1971 and declared bankruptcy due to some excess inventory issue that never actually exist.
Yes various Topper cars were listed in their inventory of cars, the number is anywhere from 71 to 75 cars. However only 49 were made in the USA.
Note 4 other cars that have been considered prototypes were actually produced by CIPSA and called Bolidos
Another posted excerpt from Ultiamte Hot Wheels Redlines BBM Channel...
"Here is a Bolidos small collector pamphlet of Johnny Lighting models produced in Mexico by the CIPSA manufacturing plant.
What is interesting in the pamphlet are the 4 models considered prototypes since they were not issued in North America.
- Custom Camaro
- Custom Mustang
- Custom Charger
- Custom Lincoln
These were indeed produced only in Mexico for that market. Why this information was never known by anyone until 2005 is a mystery to all Johnny Lightning collectors.
Quite interesting what you discover on the bay!"
If anyone is interested in acquuring some of this inventory that was never made but listed in the various catalogs well now is your change.
